George was Associate Editor of The Scotsman newspaper for nine years and now writes a weekly column for The National. His articles have appeared in a variety of publications over the years, including the Sunday Herald, The Spectator, The New Statesman and Prospect Magazine.
George was born in Glasgow in 1949, grew up in a council house in Drumchapel and studied political economy at Glasgow University. For 25 years he lectured on economics at Edinburgh’s Napier University, where he specialised in energy and the Scottish economy. An elected member of Edinburgh Council for 12 years, he was in charge of the capital’s economic development programme, overseeing the creation of the Gyle Business Park. He founded the Edinburgh International Science Festival, and has served on the boards of numerous arts organisations, including the Edinburgh International Festival, the Traverse Theatre, 7:84 Theatre Company and the Edinburgh International Film Festival. He is a former Chair of the Edinburgh Tourist Board. He has produced TV documentaries for the Discovery and History Channels which are still being shown regularly.
During the referendum campaign he co-authored a book with Alan Cochrane, Scottish editor of the Daily Telegraph, in which he put the case for independence, with Cochrane arguing for the Union. George was elected as SNP MP for East Lothian in May 2015 and now serves on the Treasury Select Committee as well as chairing and serving on several All Party Parliamentary Groups.
